If you're considering a stairlift for yourself or a loved one, one of the first questions you’ll ask is: how much does a stairlift cost in Ireland? The answer depends on the type of stairlift, the features you need and whether you buy new, reconditioned or rent. This guide breaks down the average stairlift prices in Ireland in 2025, plus tips on getting the best value for your money. Straight Stairlift: €2300-3000 Second Hand Straight Stairlift: €1400-2000 Curved Stairlift: €5500-€8000 Second Hand Curved Stairlift: €3800 -€5500 Note: These are guide prices. Final costs depend on your specific stairs, options like powered swivel seats or hinged rails and the supplier you choose. Straight vs Curved Stairlifts: Why the Big Difference? Straight stairlifts are the most affordable option because they are installed on a standard, pre-made rail. In contrast, curved stairlifts are significantly more expensive, as they require a custom-built rail designed to match the exact curves and turns of your staircase. Other Cost Factors to Consider A home survey is included free of charge with BM Stairlifts. Optional features such as powered swivel seats, remote controls, hinged rails, or upgraded upholstery can add between €200 and €1,000+ to the overall cost. Ways to Save on Stairlifts in Ireland Consider opting for reconditioned stairlifts, especially for straight stairs, as they offer the same safety at a lower cost. You may also qualify for grants such as the Housing Adaptation Grant for Older People or People with a Disability. Additionally, in some cases, you may be able to reclaim VAT on mobility aids installed in your home. How BM Stairlifts Can Help? At BM Stairlifts, we offer free home assessments and fast installation, typically completed within 1 to 2 days. Did you know The Housing Adaptation Grant for People with a Disability is a grant you can get if you have a physical, sensory, mental health or intellectual disability. It provides funding so you can improve how you enter and move around your home. You could be eligible for stairlift grants of up to 100% of the cost of the install and the grant funding can also be used for bathroom adaptations, ramps and railings. It can be confusing about where to even start, which is where we come in providing advice and grant assistance. Am I eligible? The Housing Adaptation Grant is available to people with a gross household income of up to €75,000 a year. Your local authority will assess your total household to find out if you qualify for the grant and the level of funding you will get. You will need to own the property and the home needs to be your main residence. You or someone in the household has a disability or mobility issue requiring the adaptation. The application form is available for download here. 1. Obtain a Medical Report To support your grant application you will need to obtain a medical report from your GP or an occupational therapist. This is a key part of the application as the report provides professional confirmation that the stairlift is medically necessary. Your local county council will rely on this report to outline the urgency and prioritise funding for those with genuine medical needs. 2. Arrange a Free Stairlift Home Survey with BM Stairlifts Contact BM Stairlifts to book a no obligation free home survey. A member of our team will be in touch to arrange a home survey at a time that suits you. A specialist will visit your home to assess your needs, recommend the most suitable stairlift and provide a quote. You’ll now have the necessary details for your stairlift grant application. 3. Identify Local County Council for Stairlift Grant Application Each county council has their own individual requirements for grant applications, so it’s important to check their specific requirements directly with them. Please find the relevant contact details for your county council here. 4. Prepare Application Documents You will need to prepare all your documents requested by your specific county council. Usually this will consist of the application form, your stairlift quote, the GP or Occupational Therapists report and proof of income. If you need assistance with any of the steps outlined here, please feel free to contact BM Stairlifts on 01 802 0405. 5. Submit Your Application Submit your grant application to your local county council. Submitting a full and correct application helps avoid delays and ensures it can be processed efficiently. You’re application will then move to the assessment stage. 6. Assessment and Approval Once your completed application is submitted, it enters the assessment phase, which can take between 4 to 12 weeks. During this time, a council officer may arrange a visit to your home to inspect the proposed area for the stairlift or other adaptations. Your medical documentation and financial information will be carefully reviewed to ensure eligibility. Applications are prioritised based on urgency and medical necessity.
